Alex J. Cope is a poet, translator, and educator based in Chicago. Previously, they lived in Paris, where they hosted La Méduse, a multilingual queer and feminist reading series. They hold a MA in Comparative Literature from Université Paris 8, completing a thesis on the eschatological narratives of Alice Notley and Monique Wittig.
Specialized in language acquisition and creative writing, they have taught French, English, and language arts in France and the United States, with robust experience in secondary and post-secondary institutions. A firm believer in the necessity of moving beyond the academy, they co-organize a community writing workshop out of the PO Box Collective, a social practice center and mutual aid hub in Chicago, as part of its monthly Poetry Series.
Poems from their manuscript soft like a spider have appeared in publications by Tyger Quarterly, Sixty Inches from Center, The Rumpus, Pilot Press London, and Hooligan Magazine. With a committment to queer, trans, and anti-authoritarian literature, they are currently translating work by Noah Truong, Claude Cahun, and Louise Michel.
